Retail Sales Fell in December, a Slowdown in a Robust Holiday Shopping Season

Retail sales fell 1.9 percent in December, the Commerce Department reported on Friday, reflecting a slowdown during an otherwise robust holiday shopping season that started earlier in the year for many consumers. It was the first drop after four straight months of sales increases, though the gain in November slowed from October because of the lengthened holiday shopping season brought on by fears of product shortages and price increases. Total sales for October through December were up 17.1 percent from a year earlier, according to the report. December sales rose 16.9 percent from 2020. Beth Ann Bovino, chief U.S. economist

Holiday shopping gets off to a disappointingly sluggish start

US retail sales grew by 0.3% in November, a sharp decline from the previous month and less than economists had predicted. Even so, sales were 16.1% higher than in the same period last year. Americans have been struggling with rising prices and supply shortages this year. The emergence of the fast-spreading Omicron coronavirus variant has also rattled markets and industries, such as travel. But economists and retail sector experts still believe that the holiday shopping season will be strong. Many consumers have built up excess savings during the pandemic and have been bolstered by rounds of federal stimulus and rising

What inflation and supply chain woes mean for holiday shopping and Black Friday

Holiday shopping is going to be annoying this year. Many things are more expensive, and in-demand items are hard to find. It’s a real “All I want for Christmas is to stop hearing about supply chains and inflation for half a second” moment. While it’s a weird time in the economy, that weirdness isn’t necessarily translating to people holding back on buying. People are shopping a little differently this holiday season, but they’re not not shopping. Nearly two years into a pandemic, the American consumer will not be deterred, at least not entirely. But they probably won’t be happy about

But where we spend our money matters, too, and the current supply-chain disruptions are giving us a taste of what will happen if Amazon manages to drive all the local shops out of business and leaves us at the mercy of a logistics system that was fragile even before the pandemic. Not “These Precious Days,” the book of essays
