The best wedding hairstyle trends to inspire your bridal look

Hairstylist and creative director of Virtue haircare Adir Abergel loves a wedding. Even with years of experience working with Hollywood’s biggest and brightest (Kirsten Stewart, Anne Hathaway and Jessie Buckley have him on speed dial), nothing quite tops the excitement, joy and magic felt at a wedding.

“It’s a day that is truly about the bride. You’re not creating an image based on the event or a dress or where they’re going; it’s about how you want them to feel like that day. For most people, this is their Oscar moment,’ he tells Bazaar.

His latest celebrity bride is close friend Nicola Peltz-Beckham, for whom he created a chic half-up-half-down ‘do complete with a soft, curtain fringe inspired by supermodel Claudia Schiffer. Big on the runways and red carpets alike, Abergel’s keen to see more brides sporting a fresh fringe this year.

“Fringes are a great way to create a different shape for your hair on your big day. If it’s all one length, there’s not much variety to play with but with a fringe, you can create beautiful movement across your face,” says Abergel.

He gave Peltz-Beckham her bangs the day of, but it’s not a move he generally recommends. If you’re planning a fringe, speak to your hairstylist at least three weeks before so you have enough time to live in it. “Always start with a longer length, and then get it trimmed if you like. For curly hair, you want to go 60 per cent longer than you need because if you have it cut somewhere dry and get married somewhere with humidity, shrinkage can happen.”

As for the type of fringe, there’s no prescriptive rule other than understanding your face and what it needs. Heavier bangs often suit a wider forehead while a longer curtain fringe a la Peltz-Beckham can balance a heart shape face. Prefer the shape of one eye than the other? Abergel recommends a side-swept fringe to enhance it. “Fringes can really bring out the best parts of your face.”

Sixties icons Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton and Mary Quant set the beauty mood for artist and model Ivy Getty’s wedding extravaganza. Getty’s eyebrow-skimming fringe takes on an otherworldly feel when styled with loose waves by hairstylist Bobby Elliott, topped off with a dreamy quartz headpiece.

Like Peltz-Beckham demonstrated, a half-up hairstyle is another big trend this season, and for one of her wedding hairstyles Hailey Bieber did the same. A minimalist bow lends an added romantic feel to Bieber’s version.

For a modern bridal up-do, treading the balance between hard and soft is paramount. “I like styles that have an architectural feel to them, something a little tighter and pulled back as seen on Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber”, says Abergel.

THE MODERN PONY

Actor, writer and producer Issa Rae’s immaculate pony by hairstylist Felicia Leatherwood lent understated glamour to her Vera Wang Haute gown. Texture and volume along the lengths create balance and visual interest to the elegant, pulled back style.

Pre-wedding hair prep for brides

As for ensuring your hair is in its best shape, Abergel advices his clients to religiously use a nourishing hair mask such as Virtue Restorative Treatment Mask every two days for the fortnight leading up to the wedding. The better condition your hair is in, the easier it will be for your stylist on the day to make your hair look it’s absolute best – however you choose to wear it.
