Christmas is a joyous and magical time for children of all ages.

As the famous holiday closes in, many families will make their way to local malls in the coming weeks to get a traditional photo of Santa and his helpers with their children.

The white-bearded holiday legend full of gifts and “ho ho ho’s” can be found at most malls accepting Christmas wish lists and deciding who has been naughty or nice.

Although sitting on Santa’s lap is a popular trend, mall Santas had to adjust due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the past couple of years, which prevented children from sitting on Santa’s lap and greatly limited large socialized gatherings.

Since 2020, Santas throughout the country have been losing job opportunities due to the first holiday season following the COVID-19 pandemic, and Santa visits were mostly held online or with masks.

David “Santa” Hubert, who disguises himself as Santa at Northpark Mall in Jackson, said he is glad Santas are coming back to the malls.

“This is the first time I’ve done mall Santa, but I’ve done multiple benefit events as Santa,” Hubert said. “The best thing I get from this is seeing all the happy kids’ faces … without masks and listening to what they want for Christmas.”

Hubert said some of the children’s lists are heart-warming and selfless.

“One child specifically asked for a new refrigerator for her mom for Christmas along with others that were thinking about others who are less fortunate,” he said.

This year’s theme at Northpark is “Experience a new and magical visit with Santa.”

Hubert is located in the center court seven days a week with his helpers and a 10-foot tall Christmas tree with no reservations needed.

Northpark shopping center also offers different themes throughout the week that are catered to David Santa.
